Haskins Commission Mission Statement

The Haskins Commission mission is "To promote amateur golf by awarding the Most Outstanding Collegiate Golfer of the Year the annual Haskins Award."

Further, the role of the Haskins Commission is to administer the balloting process by distributing ballots to the eligible collegiate peers, coaches, and golf media and subsequently verifying and counting the votes cast for each individual. The Haskins Commission recognizes the top two finishers as the Winner and Runner-up.

The Haskins Commission, in conjunction with the Southeastern Amateur Committee will also recognize those players who have made the final cut in the Haskins Chase and who also play in the Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament.

Both the Haskins Commission and Southeastern Amateur are headquartered at the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, GA. The Southeastern Amateur was first established by Mr. Haskins in 1922, and of course the Haskins Award was given the name in 1971 to honor Mr. Haskins' lifelong body of work promoting Amateur Golf.

Many of Mr. Haskins' students were on the original Haskins Commission. It is unknown exactly how many students Mr. Haskins actually taught over the years, but the championships earned by those students are a great many. Somewhere around 500. Mr. Haskins' most notable student was Hugh Royer Jr. who won the Western Open which at that time was just below a major. It is the image of Mr. Royer making a golfswing taught by Mr. Haskins that now stands atop this great trophy.

The Fred Haskins Commission is based at the Country Club of Columbus, Columbus, Ga. Home of the Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament. The Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament was created by Mr. Fred Haskins shortly after accepting the position of Head Professional at the Country Club of Columbus in 1922. The Fred Haskins Commission administers the ballot process in which Division One collegiate golfers as well as national golf writers are asked to choose one of their peers as "The Most Outstanding Collegiate Golfer of the Year". © Copyright 1971-2009
