The History of the Haskins Award
Fred Haskins served as the Head Golf Professional for the
Country Club of Columbus (it was first known as the Columbus Country Club) from 1922 to 1951. In '51, Mr. Haskins slowed down
enough to become the Golf Course Superintendent and remained in this capacity until he retired in 1971.
Mr. Haskins true passion was promoting Amateur Golf.
In 1971, local golfers Billy Key, George
Hamer, and Ross and Dupont Kirven got together to create The Haskins
Award to honor his lifelong dedication to golf and his
many teaching accomplishments.
The prestigious Haskins Trophy is
presented annually by the Fred Haskins Commission to honor the Most Outstanding
Collegiate Golfer of the year.
At that time, no other award existed in college golf, so it was the perfect venue to create an award that promoted the game of golf while focusing on the amateur side of the game. The Haskins Commission decided the award would be determined by popular vote amongst Golf Writers, Coaches, and the athletes. And that the Haskins Commission itself would be merely administrators of the ballot process.
The Commission has made minor changes along the way such as including past recipients of the award in the balloting process but as a whole, still abides by the original vision of the award.
Since that time, the Haskins Commission has presented the award over 40 times including three multiple winners, Ben Crenshaw, Bobby Clampett, and Phil Mickelson.
Over time, the Haskins Commission will be compiling stories, photos, video, and memorabilia from the extensive history and adding it to this section of the website. We look forward to sharing the history of the Haskins Award with you.
