Haskins Commission President Charlie Whittington

Current Haskins Commission President Charlie Whittington was elected in 2006. Charlie has served in this capacity for three years and is credited with bringing enthusiasm and vigor to the commission and attacking the many projects which have been before him to include:

  • Haskins Trophy Set Restoration
  • HaskinsAward.org website
  • 501 C3 designation
  • Corporate Sponsorship
  • Media Partners
  • Haskins Awareness Program
  • The Chase for the Haskins
  • Ballot re-design
  • Southeastern Amateur Partnership
  • Haskins Award/Southeastern Amateur Honorees Program
  • Announcement and Presentation considerations and changes

Charlie (Spike) Whittington played three seasons (1987-89) for the Columbus State University Cougars under CSU Hall of Fame member Earl Bagley. As a sophomore, Whittington won twice, finished fifth at the national championship, was named Honorable Mention All-American, and was part of the team that finished as national runners-up in 1987. As a junior, he won twice, helped the team finish third at the national championship, and was named Honorable Mention All-American in the 1988 season. As the team captain his senior season, his 71.7 stroke average was the best in Division II and earned him a First Team All-American selection. He won four tournaments and finished in the top 10 in 12 of 13 tournaments played. His third place finish at the national tournament helped the Cougars capture the 1989 National Championship. That spring, he was selected as Columbus College's Male Athlete of the Year. Charlie was inducted into the Columbus State University Hall of Fame in 2008.

Charlie is quoted as saying "when I was growing up and preparing for college, I dreamed of being able to win that trophy (the Haskins trophy). And I want to restore that enthusiasm to the young amateur golfers in America and around the world. I want young golfers to know what the Haskins Award is when they are coming up in junior golf. And when they make it to the collegiate ranks, chase this illustrious award as the many great players before them did."

The Haskins Commission is grateful for Charlie's outstanding leadership and looks forward to the years to come.
